Confirm the permitted work
Check occupational and business licensing, insurance, local permits and any premises requirements for the actual services and location. A short business course does not expand an occupational license.
Model the business separately from wages
Employee salary statistics do not represent business revenue or profit. Estimate billable hours, realistic demand, materials, travel, tools, insurance, administration and time when you are not earning.
Use a simple break-even plan
List monthly fixed costs and the contribution left from each sale after its variable costs. Divide fixed costs by a positive contribution per sale to explore a break-even scenario. Test lower demand and delayed customer payment as well as an optimistic case.
Prepare records and terms
Discuss business structure, taxes and records with suitable advisers. Create clear quotes, scope, cancellation and payment terms appropriate to your work; do not copy an unrelated business’s contract without review.
Use free public support
SBA planning and local counseling routes can help you investigate the business model and required steps. Verify any advisor’s role and costs before committing.
