Prepare for a trade-job interview

Practice explaining a real task, a problem and how you checked your work. Prepare questions about supervision and conditions as carefully as answers about yourself.

Prepare three truthful examples

Choose an example of solving a problem, working with someone and learning from an error. Describe the situation, your responsibility, the actions you took and the result. Do not claim an instructor’s or team member’s work as your own.

Explain your reasoning

For a technical question, clarify the information you have and the limits of your knowledge. Describe how you would find the approved procedure or ask for supervision. Guessing a safety-critical procedure is not a demonstration of confidence.

Check any practical assessment

Ask what the assessment covers, how long it lasts, what equipment is provided and who supervises. Clarify whether the work is a simulation or productive work and what arrangements apply.

Ask about the first months

Discuss induction, supervision, expected tasks, shifts, travel, equipment, pay reviews and how performance is assessed. Ask what a successful new starter is expected to learn first.

Follow up with a clear record

Note the questions answered, promises that need writing and the decision timeline. Compare the offer with your practical attendance and travel plan before accepting.
