Your starting point

Trade school as a working parent or carer

Build the timetable around everyone who depends on it. A shorter course is not easier to attend if its practical sessions conflict with care or paid work.

1. Map a normal week and a difficult week

Write down class, study, travel and placement time. Include the earliest arrival and latest finish, school holidays and a backup if childcare or transport fails. Ask whether a clinical or work placement can run outside normal class hours.

2. Price the attendance plan

Use real childcare opening hours and minimum bookings, not only your hours in class. Include transport between the childcare provider, campus and workplace. Put deposits and delayed reimbursement in the cash-flow planner.

3. Contact support before enrolling

Ask the institution about current CCAMPIS activity, childcare referrals, emergency assistance and flexible scheduling. A historical award is a lead to investigate, not an available place.

4. Get flexibility in writing

Ask about absence policies, making up labs, deferring a start, part-time progression and the cost of repeating a session. Compare those answers before signing.
