1. Choose the occupation before the school
Explore tasks, work settings and preparation levels. Compare a school course, an apprenticeship and a local public-college route where they exist.
2. Check admissions and age conditions
Ask about the diploma or equivalency requirement, subject prerequisites, minimum ages and any separate conditions for work placements or industry exams. Do not assume being admitted establishes occupational eligibility.
3. Understand the award and progression
Find out whether the program is credit or noncredit, what the award is, and whether a receiving college has a written transfer agreement. Confirm the actual credits and conditions.
4. Compare cost and support
Complete the relevant aid process with the school, read the agreement and ask a trusted person to review unfamiliar terms. Budget for tools and transport as well as tuition.
