Trade school vs. community college

The useful comparison is between specific programs. Both types of provider can offer occupational training, but the award, timetable, cost and transfer options can differ.

Compare like with like

Place the same occupation and award level side by side. A short noncredit class, an occupational certificate and an associate degree serve different purposes even when their titles sound similar.

Look beyond the advertised duration

Ask whether prerequisite courses, waiting lists, general education, clinical hours and exams are included in the advertised schedule. Confirm how often required classes run.

Check transferability before enrolling

Credit acceptance is decided by the receiving institution. Ask the college you may attend next whether it will accept the specific credits; a sending school’s assurance is not enough.

Compare your total cost

Include tools, transport, living expenses and earnings you may give up. Compare written aid offers and current program quotes, not school-wide annual averages alone.
