Questions to ask about employer-paid training

Paid training, tuition reimbursement and a job-linked training loan can have very different terms. Read the written agreement before treating any of them as free training.

Identify who pays and when

Ask whether the employer pays the provider directly, reimburses you after completion or deducts a cost over time. Find out who pays if you do not complete the course.

Read service and repayment terms

Check any minimum employment commitment, repayment amount, declining balance and exceptions. Keep the training agreement alongside the job offer.

Confirm the employment arrangement

Ask about starting pay, work location, required travel, schedule and when employment begins. A training place is not always a guaranteed position.

Check whether the credential travels with you

Find out whether the award or certification is recognized beyond that employer and whether you receive your own record of completed training.
